Ears are burning: 5 fabulous queer podcasts you need to listen to

Whether you want to sit back and laugh, learn something new, learn something old or get your pop culture fix, these queer interest podcasts will entertain and delight you.

In no particular order:

1. Food 4 Thot

Although it can be considered a roundtable-style podcast, Food 4 Thot makes you feel like you are listening to a group of your own long-time friends chatting away. Hosted by Dennis Norris II, a former figure skater, Joseph Osmundson, a scientist with a PhD, Tommy Pico, who won a Whiting Award and American Book Award in 2018, and Fran Tirado, the Deputy Editor of Out Magazine, the podcast is filled to the brim with easy-flowing and witty banter. The multiracial group of queer writers discuss all things LGBTQ+ related (high-brow and low-brow alike), especially through the lens of their own experiences, and make you feel like your part of the conversation. So if you’re ready to sit back, relax and listen to your friends overshare, take a listen to Food 4 Thot.

2. Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness

If you are a fan of Queer Eye, you’ll probably recognise the name Jonathan Van Ness. In Getting Curious, the Fab Five’s grooming and self-care guru dives into a wide range of topics. In his own words, the podcast is a “non-related, fun look at things I find curious”. From cults to bees, figure skating and so much more, in every episode Johnathan sits down with an expert to get the lowdown on a specific topic. If you want to learn something new, packaged in Johnathan’s inquisitive and non-judgmental approach, give it a listen.

3. Making Gay History

Offering intimate and very personal glimpses into queer history, Making Gay History pulls back the veil to reveal the everyday people on the frontlines of the LGBTQ movement from 1945 to 1990. While gathering information for his 1992 book, Making Gay History, host Eric Marcus recorded interviews with members of the queer community. He shares these oral histories in the podcast, with recordings of Randy Shilts, Evelyn Hooker, Vito Russo, Larry Kramer, Ann Northrop and more. Some recordings are only over 12 minutes long, so if you would like a glimpse into the lives of these queer figures, give it a listen.

4. Lovett or Leave It

Do you like your politics to be served with a massive dose of comedy? Then this is the podcast for you. With a rotating panel of guest commentators, openly gay (and totally hilarious) host, Jon Lovett, runs through the week’s headlines. Jon, a former speech writer for President Obama, discusses current affairs, but be ready for sporadic bits of ‘gay news’ (the more random, the better). The humour is often darkly delicious, so if you’re anything like me, you’ll love it. Is the news making you blue? Let Lovett or Leave It help you take the load off. Prepare for plenty of pop culture references and laughing out loud.

5. Keep It

Are you a pop culture junkie? You can get your fix with Keep it. Hosted by Ira Madison III and Louis Virtel, the podcast is concerned with anything or anyone to do with pop culture, filtered through a queer lens. Tune in for clued-up commentary on films, TV, music and politics and people and lough-out-loud jokes and references

6. GaySA Radio Podcast

A list like this would not be complete if we did not mention our own podcast. We cover anything from LGBTQ+ artists to the legal aspects of same sex partnerships. You can listen to all our podcasts here.
