Hendrik chats to Cameron Lawry about his new short film, Confessions & Kirsten Scharneck, who stars in the film.

Confessions, a local short film about a broken gay man in search of a guiding light in a homophobic society, premieres at the Labia Theatre in Cape Town on 22 November.

Written and directed by AFDA film student Cameron Lawry, Confessions tells the story of Marco, who is determined to define “sin” and discover the true meaning of “love in a journey of self-discovery. It’s a film that hopes to initiate conversations for change.

Marco, grieving the loss of his lover Tom, returns to his church for guidance and support. It is here where he once again connects with Father Ray, a Catholic priest who is determined to maintain traditions. In a search for absolution, Marco contacts Carla, a new parish member. He soon realises that he is losing himself.

“Conversations between the LGBTQ+ community and religious organisations have always been complicated,” says Lawry. “On one hand, love and acceptance are preached but not practised, on the other hand, minority groups are pushed out for being different or even taboo. I wanted to tackle the issue of homophobia in South Africa. Our constitution might be dubbed one of the most progressive but the lived experience shows the disparity. Much like the government, the church has a major role in shaping the minds of society.”

Lawry adds: “Equipped with a passionate crew and a multifaceted cast we set off to uncover why many LGBTQ+ people feel alone, misinformed and constantly trying to wedge themselves into a box defined by society.”

Confessions will premiere in South Africa’s oldest cinema, The Labia in Cape Town, on the 22nd of November 2019 at 20:50. Tickets are R30. Enjoy this gripping tale with a glass of Merlot, a gin slush and a box of salty popcorn.

Also, on 18 November, the filmmakers will host a panel discussion on the themes of sexuality and religion and pose the question, can these two coexist? Join them and add your voice to the discussion at 18:30 at the Actors Studio at AFDA, Observatory Cape Town.
