As Africa’s only online LGBTQ+ radio platform with an audience across the globe, the time has come to niche further down into this market segment. And one of the ways this will be achieved from October is that the playlist is changing.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) music is a grouping of musical genres that focus on the experiences of gender and sexual minorities as a product of the broad gay liberation movement.

LGBTQ+ music spans the entire spectrum of popular music. Lyricism and song content typically express the frustration, anxiety, and hope associated with non-normative sexual and gender identities, offering marginalized groups a vital platform for expression. Recently, popular music has provided an arena where marginalized voices can be heard and sexual identities shaped, challenged and renegotiated.

Artists like Troye Sivan, Sam Smith, Kehlani, Hayley Kiyoko, Mary Lambert, Halsey, MUNA, Kevin Abstract (Brockhampton), Sam Smith, Le1f, Azealia Banks and Sia are just some of the well-known artists that will find space in the playlist. Of course, there are many LGBTQ+ musicians that are not very well known, and they deserve a platform for their music to be played. Artists like Anohni, Asbjorn, Doug Locke, Mona and many others have been included in the new playlist.

GaySA Radio will provide a platform for such emerging young artists by giving their music airplay, as well as introducing them to a broader LGBTQ+ audience. This, of course, means that the language policy of English only for our music falls away, as LGBTQ+ musicians from all over the world will be included. We believe this will make for an interesting mix of music, as there are so many genres to choose from, and each show will in time develop its own musical identity.

Lesser-known LGBTQ+ artists like Asbjorn are also finding a place on the new GaySA Radio playlist

If you want to submit your music to our playlist, just pop an email with the artist biography and the tracks to Please indicate the LGBTQ+ nature of the artist in the submission too.

Breaking new ground and musically going where no-one has ever gone before, GaySA Radio’s LGBTQ+ playlist will also feature allies and icons. So keep on listening to GaySA Radio and enjoy our refreshed sound.
