The man behind one of the past few months’ most hooking earworms came out as gay on the last day of Pride month 2019. After making a surprise appearance at Glastonbury with Miley Cyrus, hip-hop star Lil Nas X sent out a tweet that dropped a few hints about his sexual orientation on the last day of Pride month 2019.

Speaking on the BBC Breakfast a few days after his tweets, Lil Nas X discussed the difficulty of coming out when both the country and hip-hop communities are not typically hailed as havens for the LGBT community.

“It’s something I was considering never doing, ever. Taking to the grave. But I don’t wanna live my entire life – especially how I got to where I’m at – not doing what I wanna do,” the “Old Town Road” singer told the hosts of the BBC Breakfast.

He said that he hoped he was opening doors for other performers within the hip-hop and country communities.

In the mean time, fellow rapper Young Thug has criticised Lil Nas X’s decision to come out, citing concerns over the young star’s sexuality overshadowing his career and music.

“I feel like he probably shouldn’t have told the world, because these days—motherf***ers is just all judgement,” Young Thug told Complex. “It ain’t even about the music no more, soon as the song comes on, everybody’s like ‘this gay ass n***a.’”

“Old Town Road”, the massive hit that saw country legend Billy Ray Cyrus team up with Lil Nas X earlier this year, has been the number 1 song in the US since April, and a remix of the song was released on 12 July. You can check out the highly anticipated rework below.
