In the early morning hours of June 16th, a gay couple was assaulted outside a bar in Washington DC, USA.

Homophobic slurs were allegedly hurled at the couple by around 15 people. The attack took place when Karl Craven and his boyfriend, Braden Brecht, walked from Hawthorne’s restaurant to a gay sports bar called Nellie’s.

“They came out of nowhere… I don’t remember how long they kept beating him for,” Craven said.

“He was leaning against me and a few guys started yelling ‘faggot’ at him and started to swing at him.”

The group also stole Craven’s wallet and his boyfriend’s cell phone.

According to a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department, three suspects where arrested in connection with the attack. The suspects include Marcus Britt, 19, and two juvenile males, ages 15 and 16.

Craven started a GoFundMe page to raise funds to help with his boyfriend’s medical bills.

The fundraising page states that “he doesn’t have insurance and can’t afford the ER and tooth repair bills.”

“Any help would be greatly appreciated,” Craven wrote. According to the FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics report, Anti-LGBTQ hate crimes rose 3 percent across the United States in 2017.
