Many people only became aware of the name Nakhane after his role in the controversial, if critically acclaimed film Inxeba (The Wound) but this musician and actor had been making waves locally long before Inxeba’s release – and he is now also garnering international attention.
So much, in fact, that he recently released a new single in collaboration with ANOHNI – who formerly performed as Antony and the Johnsons – after the latter expressed her admiration of Nakhane in a Facebook post, describing his voice as a “lake of deep soulfulness”.
Nakhane already drew attention on the South African music scene after his first album, “Brave Confusion” scored four SAMA nominations: for album of the year, newcomer of the year, male artist of the year and best alternative album. In 2017, he opened for Erasure in Berlin.
Dubbed “New Brighton”, the new song, featuring ANOHNI, will be featured on a re-issue of Nakhane’s previous album, together with covers of New Order and David Bowie.
As a precursor to the broader re-release of his album “You Will Not Die” later in February, we take a look at the genius that is Nakhane.
