The third-ever Miss Drag South Africa event is set to take place at the State Theatre in Pretoria on 4 October, setting the stage for the annual Pretoria LGBT Pride Festival, which will be held the day after the prestigious event.
Miss Drag SA 2018, Miss Vicky, will be handing her crown to one of ten finalists, all competing for the coveted title with their various “Drag with a Purpose” projects. This part of the competition, which tasks the LGBTQI+ leaders with initiating a project that actively strives to uplift their communities, comprises 40% of the total results of the competition, with 25% of the total results made up of the pre-judging interviews and the remaining 35% coming from the crowning gala results.
Finalists will face off in national costume, swimwear and evening wear categories before a question round will determine the top 5. A final head-to-head question round, featuring the top 3 finalists, will come to a crescendo with the crowning of Miss Drag SA 2019.
Speaking to MambaOnline, event organiser Enigma von Hamburg said that the competition certainly isn’t just about looks.
“This platform is much more than just a beauty contest or modelling competition. It highlights the aim of ‘Drag with a Purpose’, which is to inspire ordinary people who carry out extraordinary things to continuously advocate for the advancement of LGBTQIA+ rights and our drag culture, serve as agents for change and uplift their communities by serving as positive role models.”
Tickets for the Miss Drag South Africa gala event cost R180, and can be bought at any Pick n Pay, or online at Webtickets.
