Impulse Group is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that was founded 10 years ago by Jose Ramos in Los Angeles in the USA. It is an international group dedicated to promoting healthier sexual lifestyles among gay men around the world. With support from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), this group of volunteers works to create campaigns, events, and online content to reach a new generation of gay men who live in a modern and rapidly evolving world.

The group has 25 chapters (including Cape Town) in different cities and countries around the world. Towards the end of 2018, after years of being in the pipeline, Impulse Group finally took a leap to open its first chapter in Africa, right here in The Mother City. The Cape Town chapter is run and managed by a group of young queer, sex-positive men. The chapter’s current board consists of its President, Ashraf Booley, and its Vice President, Asanda Mankayi, who lead the group of volunteers.

“Think of us as ambassadors for safer sex. We are a group of sex-positive men promoting safer sex in fun and creative ways. Our goal is to create an inclusive community for queer bodies in Cape Town in which they feel comfortable enough to openly discuss issues pertaining to their bodies, sexual and mental health. We are here to encourage each other to protect ourselves and our partner(s) and to take ownership of our bodies and sexual health. We want to encourage people who are living with HIV to remain on treatment, and to keep those who are negative, negative,” says Ashraf Booley, Impulse Cape Town’s President.

On Saturday 13 April 2019, Impulse Group will officially launch its Cape Town chapter at the historic 6 Spin Street in Cape Town and have invited a number of LGBTI+ organisations and individuals to join them to celebrate this special occasion. The event is FREE and individuals can secure their tickets by clicking HERE. If you have any enquiries, please email us on ImpulseCapeTown@gmail.com.

The local chapter has already installed two new condom dispensers filled with condoms from AHF – one at Zer021 Social Club in Zonnebloem and another at Berta’s Restaurant in Woodstock, as part of their initiative for International Condom Day, which was celebrated in February this year.
