While we still have a very long way to go – especially when it comes to trans characters and LGBTQ+ characters of colour – 2018 was a good year for representation of LGBTQ+ people on the small screen.

This year, we had characters that made us cry tears of laughter like David Rose (Schitt’s Creek), Jack McFarland (Will & Grace) and the guys from Modern Family, while others tore our hearts into pieces (The Handmaid’s Tale). We said goodbye to the very inclusive Sense8 and met the cast of Rise. Glee alumni Darren Criss brought us the very disturbing Andrew Cunanan, while DeRon Horton gave the world some insight into being black in the gay community and gay in the black community.

Netflix is taking the lead with this year’s most beloved LGBTQ+ characters.
